Sound
Add BEEP effects for movement, combat hits, treasure, healing and death — audio feedback for every action.
A silent game feels incomplete. Sound provides feedback — confirming actions, warning of danger, celebrating success. The Spectrum beeper is limited to a single channel of square waves, but carefully chosen tones add polish to every interaction. Short durations keep the pace brisk in a turn-based game where any delay feels sluggish.

How It Works
Line 188 plays a short high tone when the player moves: BEEP 0.01, 5. Duration 0.01 seconds is barely audible — a brief tick that confirms the move without slowing the game.
Lines 840 and 854 are the combat sounds. The player hitting a monster plays BEEP 0.02, 5 — a short positive tone. The monster hitting back plays BEEP 0.02, -5 — a lower tone that sounds like impact. The pitch difference (positive vs negative) lets the player hear who is attacking without reading the text.
Lines 608 play two descending tones when the player descends stairs: BEEP 0.1, -5: BEEP 0.1, -10. The falling pitch suggests going deeper.
Lines 710-712 play rising tones when a potion is used: BEEP 0.05, 12: BEEP 0.05, 15. The ascending pitch suggests healing and restoration.
Line 770 plays a single positive tone when a chest is opened: BEEP 0.05, 10. Short and cheerful.
Lines 1012 play a low two-note death knell: BEEP 0.2, -10: BEEP 0.2, -15. The long duration and low pitch convey finality.
Lines 1120 play the victory fanfare: four ascending notes — BEEP 0.1, 12: BEEP 0.1, 16: BEEP 0.2, 19: BEEP 0.3, 24. The rising pitch and increasing duration build to a triumphant finish.
Duration Matters
In a turn-based game, BEEP halts execution until it finishes. A 1-second BEEP delays the next turn by a full second. The movement sound at 0.01 seconds is nearly instant. The death knell at 0.4 seconds total (two 0.2-second tones) is long enough to register emotionally but short enough to avoid frustration.
The guideline: movement and combat sounds should be under 0.05 seconds each. Event sounds (stairs, chests, healing) can be 0.1-0.2 seconds. Special moments (death, victory) can be 0.5-1.0 seconds because they only play once.
Pitch as Meaning
Positive pitches (above 0) sound bright and upward. Negative pitches (below 0) sound low and ominous. This natural association maps well to game events: high tones for good things (healing, treasure, victory), low tones for bad things (damage, death, descending). The player learns these associations quickly and begins to react to sounds before reading the accompanying text.
Try This
Remove all sounds. Comment out every BEEP line and play the game. How does it feel compared to the version with sound? What do you miss most?
Add a wall bump sound. Play a very short, low BEEP when the player tries to walk into a wall. This acknowledges the blocked move, which otherwise produces no feedback.
