Lemmings creation

Jones and artist Mike Dailly created Lemmings from a simple animation test. Dailly drew tiny walking figures; Jones saw gameplay potential. The puzzle mechanics—guiding mindless creatures through hazards—emerged from technical constraints. The game sold millions and spawned countless imitators.

Grand Theft Auto origins

GTA began as “Race’n’Chase,” a cops-and-robbers concept. Jones directed the project through its transformation into an open-world crime game. He departed DMA before GTA III’s 3D revolution, but the foundation was his.

Post-DMA career

Studio Era Output
Realtime Worlds 2002-10 Crackdown, APB
Cloudgine 2012-18 Cloud computing middleware

Realtime Worlds collapsed after APB’s troubled launch, one of gaming’s most expensive failures. Jones later founded Cloudgine, eventually acquired by Epic Games.

Dundee legacy

Jones established Dundee as a games development hub. DMA’s presence attracted talent; the University of Abertay launched Europe’s first game design degree. Studios like 4J (Minecraft console ports) and Ruffian grew from seeds Jones planted.
