Defer Object Changes Until After Traversal on C64

Spawning or deleting objects during a traversal can accidentally update a new object twice or skip a neighbour.

Spawning or deleting objects during a traversal can accidentally update a new object twice or skip a neighbour.

C64 shows the working diagnostic row 00 01 00 01 03 01 00 02.
A completed native caller displays 00 01 00 01 03 01 00 02. The public field order below identifies these bytes; the capture is a state diagnostic, not a recording of a finished game.

Use it in a project

Four object slots use ACTIVE bits0..3 and generations G0..G3. MODE=1 queues a spawn in SLOT; MODE=2 queues a removal of SLOT with GENERATION; MODE=3 flushes. MODE=0 clears pending commands without changing objects. COUNT is0..4. Queueing never changes the object table. A full queue returns FULL=1 and preserves its commands. Flush handles commands in insertion order: spawn only a free slot and increment its generation modulo256; remove only a live matching-generation slot. APPLIED/REJECTED count results and COUNT becomes zero. Invalid global state or queued command structure sets VALID=0 and leaves objects and queue intact. Slot payload initialisation is caller-owned.

Include component.inc once (MOS callers include the shared 6502 implementation through it). Reserve the public fields in this exact order: APPLIED, REJECTED, FULL, VALID, MODE, SLOT, GENERATION, ACTIVE, COUNT, G0, G1, G2, G3, O0, O1, O2, O3, S0, S1, S2, S3, H0, H1, H2, H3. They occupy 25 contiguous bytes. Also reserve the private workspace: T0, T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, EXPR_SAVE (8 bytes). Array names in the explanation refer to the numbered consecutive bindings, such as C0, C1 and so on.

Call object_command_buffer_init once at the intended reset boundary. It clears inputs as well as outputs and workspace. Set your starting state and configuration afterwards, then call object_command_buffer_step whenever the described event occurs. The helper reads no device, waits for no frame and installs no interrupt handler.

Ownership Fields
Retain between calls ACTIVE, G0..G3, COUNT and queued O/S/H arrays
Supply before service MODE, SLOT and GENERATION
Read after service APPLIED, REJECTED, FULL, VALID and updated table/queue

A validation pass checks every queued operation before mutation. The application pass then honours insertion order and current generations, so a stale removal cannot delete a newly reused slot. Queueing and flushing are distinct mutation boundaries.

Machine contract

A/X/status may change; Y and decimal mode are preserved. Use CLD for binary arithmetic. A direct JSR needs two return-address stack bytes. The helper makes no nested calls and adds no other stack use. Its named scratch is private workspace, not a pointer, a ROM variable or shared zero-page space that the game may borrow concurrently. The samples use fixed symbol bindings. Scope or rename every label and binding, including the component_end measurement marker, and allocate a separate block for each independent instance. Different helpers can also use common field names, so combining them needs separate namespaces or explicitly renamed bindings. Give each block one mutation owner.

The diagnostic PRG owns screen, font and colour RAM and disables interrupts; it does not return to BASIC. The reusable helper does none of those things.

Adapt the caller

demo.asm supplies the bindings and include order. exercise.inc first runs table cases, then a separate client retaining state between calls. A game can call the public step entry directly and remove the diagnostic packet and display. Do not copy the diagnostic’s hardware takeover into an existing game loop.

Build with make ASM198X=/path/to/asm198x. The Makefile produces normal, custom, deliberately wrong and repaired programs. Tools must already be installed; the sample downloads nothing.

Customise it

Queue a spawn then a matching removal of the same slot; insertion order leaves it free after one flush. The maintained custom caller changes its inputs or client sequence rather than hiding a different implementation behind the same label. Compare every state of the two clients, not only their final display.

The custom diagnostic row is 02 00 00 01 03 02 01 00. The full client trace in the source explains how it gets there.

Mistake and repair

The wrong client clears the pending count before each service. Flush sees an empty queue and the requested spawn never happens. Retain the command buffer until the traversal ends and a deliberate flush consumes it.

The BROKEN branch lives in the sequential client, not the reusable helper. wrong.asm selects it; repaired.asm restores the normal call sequence. The repaired executable matches the normal program (for Spectrum, compare loaded CODE rather than the tape filename).

Select the deliberately wrong client

C64 shows the deliberate error row 00 00 00 01 03 01 00 00.
The wrong client completes with 00 00 00 01 03 01 00 00; its changed inputs and state explain the result.

Cost and alternatives

The measured helper extent is 578 code bytes; public state is 25 bytes and private scratch is 8 bytes. There are no immutable helper tables. Caller data, the test cases, return-address stack, alignment and display buffers cost additional space. These are assembled sizes, not cycle measurements.

At most four validation steps and four applications, each with at most three bit shifts. Compared with immediate mutation this needs queue storage and a flush phase, but traversal sees a stable object set. The existing event FIFO is smaller when only byte event IDs are needed.

This component owns occupancy and generations only, not a payload constructor or resource allocator. After a successful flush initialise newly live payloads before any object consumer runs; retain the queued commands externally if you need per-command payload data or outcomes. A generation byte wraps after256 reuses, so ancient handles require a stronger lifetime policy. Single update owner only; interrupt producers need separate synchronisation.

Execution evidence

Four variants run on PAL stock-ROM PRG, using Asm198x 0.0.72, Emu198x 0.44.2. Each executes 40 boundary/varied/error table cases, dirty initialisation and the separate retained-state client. An independent mathematical/container model checks every public byte after every call. This is bounded example coverage, not exhaustive correctness for every possible state.

The records retain loaded immutable code, completion, register sentinels, full packets, source/tool/firmware hashes and captures. The public gate validates these retained observations and rejects altered evidence; it does not run restricted firmware. No firmware is distributed. The eight displayed bytes are the first eight public fields, zero-padded when shorter; the packet includes every field.

Where it fits

Generation handles: Use the same lifetime rule for references outside the command buffer and keep payload ownership explicit.
