ESI belong to the founding generation of the ZX Spectrum demoscene. Their megademo The Lyra II is one of the productions that early Spectrum sceners point to when marking the moment the platform’s creative scene came of age, standing alongside the work of foundational crews like Castor Cracking Group and The Lords.
The Spectrum scene’s centre of gravity sat in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, where the machine — and its Pentagon clones — held a cult status it never quite enjoyed in the West. ESI were part of that scene’s early definition.
