Pete Cooke
A simulation, not a game with 3D in it
Author of Tau Ceti and Micronaut One — Spectrum games built as simulations first, with a solid-3D world and a systems model underneath that most contemporaries did not attempt.
Pete Cooke is one of the most heavily discussed programmers in this library’s British press — named across some forty-five issues — and CRASH put him on the cover of issue 42, July 1987, as a “Programmer: Pete Cooke” feature. The magazines treated him as a subject in his own right, not just as the person behind a title.

What Tau Ceti is
Tau Ceti looks like a 3D shooter and behaves like a simulation. You land on an abandoned colony planet, drive a skimmer between cities in a solid, shaded, filled-polygon landscape, and shut down a runaway reactor.
The parts worth noting are the ones no arcade game needed:
A world with state. The planet has cities, each with its own installations and defences, and shutting the reactor down requires collecting rods from across the map. The game is a logistics problem wearing an arcade costume.
Day and night. Time passes, visibility changes, and the tactics change with it.
A vehicle, not a crosshair. The skimmer has momentum, a heat budget, and a rate at which things go wrong. You are managing a machine, not aiming a gun.
Doing that in solid 3D on a Z80 at 3.5 MHz — with filled surfaces, not wireframe — put it among the small group of Spectrum games that made the machine look like it had been underestimated.
Why the magazines profiled him
The programmer profile was a recognisable eighties magazine form and it had a reason to exist. When a game was one person’s work, the interesting question was how one person did that, and the answer was not in the review.
Cooke got the treatment because his games raised the question loudly. Micronaut One is a tunnel-crawling 3D game with a level editor; Room Ten is three-dimensional zero-gravity ball games; Juggernaut is a lorry-driving simulation with a load that shifts. They have almost nothing in common with each other except an interest in simulating a system and then finding the game inside it — the opposite of the usual direction of travel.
Why he matters
Cooke works in simulation-first design on 8-bit hardware, a lineage that sits beside the arcade tradition instead of beneath it, and that produced Elite, Midwinter and eventually most of what people now call systemic design.
He is also a reminder of what the press was for. A magazine that puts a programmer’s name on the cover is telling its readers that the person is the reason to care — and forty years later, that cover line is the reason this entry can be written at all.
