From imported calculators to a Brazilian personal computer
DISMAC began on 25 January 1973 selling imported calculators, moved to making them, and by 1981 was selling the D-8000 — which Micro Sistemas called the first Brazilian personal computer. Its commercial director gave that magazine's first issue the clearest account this library holds of why Brazilian machines were built the way they were.
DISMAC was a Brazilian manufacturer. Micro Sistemas dates its beginning precisely — 25 January 1973 — and describes the trajectory in one sentence: it started by selling imported calculators, and went on to make electronic calculators and computers of its own.
That is the shape of Brazil’s market reserve in a single company. An importer becomes a manufacturer, because the policy made importing the harder business.
By October 1981 its D-8000 was on the cover of the first issue of Brazil’s first microcomputer magazine, under the line “O D-8000 é o primeiro lance da DISMAC na disputa do mercado brasileiro de computadores pessoais” — DISMAC’s first move in the contest for the Brazilian personal computer market. The article inside calls it o primeiro computador pessoal do Brasil.
⚠ That “first” is Micro Sistemas’s claim about a machine on its own cover, in its own launch issue, and this library holds no independent Brazilian source to test it against. Recorded as what the magazine said, not as settled.
Its own account of its constraints
The company’s commercial director, Oscar Alegre, is the source for most of what this Vault records about how Brazilian machines were designed — that imported components were avoided even where they were cheaper, that a thermal printer was ruled out because the paper would be imported, that DISMAC expected to build its own memory expansion because no peripheral industry existed yet, and that the company was “não presa a nenhuma matriz no exterior” — not tied to any parent abroad.
