Futuremark

The demo that became a benchmark

Founded by Future Crew members, Futuremark turned demoscene craft into the industry-standard 3DMark benchmarks — performance tests that are, in essence, demos that keep score.

Overview

Futuremark is the other studio that fell out of Future Crew. Where some of the group’s members founded Remedy to make games, others built Futuremark to make benchmarks — and there is no cleaner expression of the scene’s DNA. A benchmark like 3DMark is, at heart, a demo: a tightly authored real-time showcase of graphics effects, pushed to wring the most from the hardware. Futuremark simply added a score.

3DMark and its sibling PCMark became the reference tools the whole PC industry used to measure performance, run on millions of machines far beyond the scene that birthed them.

Fast facts

  • Founded: 1997, Finland.
  • Origin: Future Crew members.
  • Best known for: the 3DMark and PCMark benchmark suites.
  • Sibling studio: Remedy (same scene roots).

Scene to benchmark

A demo proves what hardware can do; a benchmark measures it. Futuremark’s products kept the demoscene’s defining skills — real-time effects, ruthless optimisation, visual spectacle on a deadline — and pointed them at a different goal. For years, the way the PC world quantified “fast” was a Future Crew production with a number attached.
