Arcade Conversion
The coin-op at home, and how close it got
Bringing a coin-op to machines a fraction of its power. Fidelity to the original was a standing critical question of the era, and conversions were reviewed as much on accuracy as on whether they were any good.
An arcade conversion is a home version of a coin-op original. It is a provenance rather than a genre — the source game could be any genre at all — but the period press treated it as a category, because conversions were judged by a criterion nothing else was: how close did it get?
That question had force because the gap was enormous. A 1987 cabinet might carry custom sprite hardware, multiple processors and megabytes of ROM; the Spectrum it was converted to had 48K and no sprite support whatsoever. Reviewers knew this, and the good ones judged conversions against what the host machine could plausibly do, not against the cabinet.
The archive shows a distinct, smaller category than “arcade game”: searching this library for arcade conversion and coin-op conversion returns 1,505 pages across 969 issues.
The press made it a category
CU Amiga‘s 1989 readers’ poll put conversion on the ballot — twice. “BEST COIN OP CONVERSION” and “BEST ARCADE CONVERSION” appear as separate lines, alongside “BEST COIN-OP (ARCADE)” for the cabinet itself and “BEST ORIGINAL GAME” for everything else. (The ballot prints both without defining the difference; no reading is imposed here.) Readers were also asked for Best LP, Best Film and Best TV programme, which says something about what these magazines thought they were.
And reviews were written to the criterion. Mean Machines on Gauntlet II: “Here’s a show-stopping arcade conversion! … one of the most faithful recreations of a coin-op yet seen on the Nintendo… This Nintendo conversion has every feature of the coin-op, and, amazingly, has all the speech.”
Why “how close did it get?” was harder than it looked
Reviewers compared a home version against a cabinet. The programmers usually could not.
The programmers had no access to the original arcade source code — the game had to be played over and over again in order to make the conversion accurate.
That is a Tiertex programmer describing Mercs, on a schedule where “virtually every one from Tiertex was coded and published within six months”. A conversion was a reconstruction from watching, done to a licensing deadline.
Unless you owned the licence. Ocean held the RoboCop rights and had sub-let them to Data East, so it could put the actual machine in front of its programmer: Peter Johnson received “the Data East arcade game supplied by Ocean, built into a handy portable suitcase, alongside a finished build of the Spectrum version.” The difference between a faithful conversion and a poor one was sometimes a contract rather than a coder.

What conversion cost

- Scrolling reinvented: hardware scrolling on the cabinet became per-frame redraw at home.
- Sound reduced: a multi-channel score becomes a beeper melody, or silence during play.
The critical debate
Whether fidelity was the right measure was argued throughout the period. A conversion that reproduced the coin-op’s layout exactly could be unplayable at home, where the player had lives to protect, not coins to feed. The best-regarded conversions — and the ones that still hold up — usually changed things deliberately to suit the machine, and reviewers increasingly rewarded that judgement over slavish copying.
What the spread looked like
The argument above is not abstract. Take five Spectrum arcade licences and read their CRASH scores in order, and the range is the whole case:

Thirty-nine points separate the best from the worst, on one machine, in one five-year window, from publishers of comparable size. Two of them — Out Run and Gryzor — were reviewed in the same issue.
CRASH’s caption on that page files Gryzor under the age of poor conversions, which is the period’s own verdict on the category rather than a retrospective one. Its Out Run review is more revealing still: it opens by telling arcade fans expecting a match to leave the room, then praises the 128K sound as “absolutely fantastic” and blames the lack of colour. The reviewer is visibly holding two standards at once — fidelity to the cabinet, and quality on the host machine — and reaching different conclusions with each.
That is the tension this category was reviewed under for a decade.
Evolution
- 1980-84: early conversions are loose interpretations, often unlicensed.
- 1985-88: licensing formalises; conversion becomes a major British publishing business.
- 1989-92: 16-bit machines close the gap, and near-parity becomes the expectation.
- 1993 onward: consoles receive near-identical ports and the category dissolves.
