PC gaming grew alongside personal computing itself. Unlike closed console ecosystems, the PC’s openness enabled modding, user-generated content, and hardware customisation. From text adventures on the IBM PC to modern esports, PC gaming has continuously pushed technical boundaries while fostering unique game genres and communities.

Sound had to be argued into existence
The entry lists “PC speaker audio (beeps only)” and moves on. Getting past that was a commercial campaign, not a hardware upgrade.
Ad Lib, “a Canadian company”, built an FM-synthesis card and then “had the audacity to approach the large American games software houses, and ask them to support this relatively cheap sound card by inserting Ad Lib drivers into their games”. There was no platform sound standard to implement — a publisher had to be persuaded, game by game, to write for one company’s board.
The alternative is described with feeling: “the PC speaker was the only other common sound source around (not the stiffest competition, I’m sure you’d agree).”
⚠ Openness cut both ways. This entry treats the PC’s openness as an unmixed advantage. With no platform holder to set a standard, vendors fought to become one, and the fight is visible in how reviewers scored them — the Ad Lib Gold’s CD-ROM interface is praised for being “a standard interface, unlike the Sound Blaster Pro which is non-standard”. Whether your card worked depended on which drivers publishers had chosen to ship.
And the platform’s reputation had to change first. PC Review looking back from 1992: “way back in the 80s when the PC was looked upon as nothing but a business machine with all of the glamour of a small gerbil.”
One aside worth keeping: the Ad Lib card’s sound came from a chip “produced, many suspected, by Yamaha (although Ad Lib always scratched the name off the chip for some reason).”
