Elevated

A world in 4096 bytes

Rgba and TBC's Elevated rendered a flythrough of lit, procedurally generated mountains in real time from an executable of just 4096 bytes — a landmark of the 4K intro.

Overview

Elevated, by Rgba and TBC, is one of the demoscene’s most-cited productions, and it is 4096 bytes — smaller than this paragraph’s worth of plain text. From that tiny executable it generates, in real time, a camera flight over lit and textured mountain ranges, the terrain raymarched into being on the fly.

It won the 4K intro competition at Breakpoint 2009 and the Scene.org Award for best 4K that year, and it is still the demo people point to when explaining what size-coding can achieve.

Fast facts

  • Groups: Rgba & TBC.
  • Platform: PC (Windows).
  • Released: 2009 — winner, Breakpoint 4K intro; Scene.org Best 4K.
  • Size: 4096 bytes.

How it fits in so little

There is no stored geometry, no texture files, no audio samples — only code. The landscape is a mathematical function evaluated per pixel (raymarched signed distance fields), the music a compact synthesiser. Elevated was a turning point in popularising those techniques, which its coder iq later carried into Shadertoy and the broader graphics world.
