The exchange did not open with software. It opened with an inventory, and the phrasing is near-identical across unconnected advertisers in one 1989 issue of Your Sinclair:

A list cost a stamp and revealed what you had without giving it away. Only after the lists crossed did disks or tapes move. The numbers traders advertised ran high — 350, 600, 1,200, “over 1600 games to swop incl Typhoon, mostly new” — and should be read as claims in a classified ad rather than audited libraries.

Some traded originals and made that a term of the deal: “Originals only. My five for your…” — a named-title exchange at a stated rate, which is a different transaction from bulk copying.

The magazine was the directory

There was no membership and no gatekeeper. You printed your full postal address in a national magazine and waited. Trading ads sat inline with equipment for-sale ads and pen-pal ads in the same column, unremarked.
