Maniac Mansion

Point and click pioneer

Maniac Mansion established the point-and-click adventure genre with its SCUMM engine, multiple playable characters, and irreverent humour that defined LucasArts.

Overview

Maniac Mansion rescued adventure games from parser frustration. Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick created SCUMM—a verb-based interface that let players click instead of type. Three teenagers infiltrating a mad scientist’s mansion could die (unlike later LucasArts games), but the puzzles were fair and the humour was sharp.
