Purpose-built gaming machines
Arcade hardware evolved from discrete logic through custom boards to standardised platforms, always pushing graphical boundaries ahead of home systems.
Arcade machines ran on specialised hardware designed for specific games or game types. Early games used discrete logic circuits; later systems evolved into programmable boards. Manufacturers like Sega, Namco, and Capcom developed their own architectures. Arcade hardware consistently outperformed home systems, justifying the coin-op business model.

“Arcade hardware” was never one thing
The generational table below is a useful shape, but it hides how far machines of the same year could differ. Fabien Sanglard sets two 1987 titles side by side.
Sega’s X Board, running Afterburner: “dual 12.5 MHz Motorola 68000 CPUs”, a Super Scaler graphics chipset “clocked at 50MHz… capable of both scaling and rotating up to 256 sprites, over two background layers, and one ‘road’ layer”, and a SegaPCM 16-channel stereo PCM chip for sound.
Capcom’s board for 1943, the same year: “a 6Mhz z80 CPU with a graphics system capable of animating 32 sprites on top of one text layer and two background layers”, with FM synthesis from a second Z80.

The boards were rebuilt for nearly every game
This entry lists long board lifespans among arcade hardware’s characteristics. That is the standardised era talking. Before it, the pattern was the opposite — Capcom’s PCBs from 1984 to 1988 show “a high variation of components”, and “even titles produced the same year wouldn’t necessarily feature the same chips”. The Z80 appears as game CPU, as sound CPU, and twice over in the 1942 board.
Even though games did mostly the same thing (move sprites over backgrounds), the hardware had to be re-invented over and over again.
Reusable platforms like CP-System and System 16 are the answer to that cost, not a description of what preceded them.
Hardware generations
Arcade technology progression:
