The specialised arcade input device offering continuous 360-degree rotation, essential for games like Tempest and Tron.
The spinner (also called a rotary controller or dial) was an arcade input device featuring a weighted knob that could spin freely in either direction. Unlike paddles that had limited rotation, spinners allowed continuous 360-degree rotation with momentum - the wheel kept spinning after you released it.
This physical property made spinners essential for games requiring precise, fast circular movement.

The word covers two different devices
This entry defines a spinner by continuous rotation, which rules out a potentiometer — a pot has end stops and cannot turn forever. Yet The Atari Book calls Pong’s controls spinners and identifies the part: “cheap potentiometers, the electronic component that the spinners are actually made from. They’re usually rated for a certain number of turns.”
Both usages are current. This entry keeps spinner for the freely-rotating optical device and paddle for the pot, but the looser sense turns up constantly in period and near-period writing, and it is worth expecting.
The distinction has a failure mode attached. Turn-rated components in the hands of people spinning them hard wear out — which is what stopped the first Pong prototype:
The legend today goes that the machine stopped working because of overflowing coins, but that’s not the case of the first breakdown. The first time was because of cheap potentiometers.
That is a good part of why later designs moved to optical encoding: an optical spinner has no wearing contact to use up.
A control limitation left in as a feature
Pong’s paddles are driven through a 555 timer fed by the controllers, and the chip could not drive them to the top of the screen:
A limitation in the chip caused the paddles not to be able to be drawn all the way to the top of the screen, leaving a small gap that a ball can fit through. Instead of coming up with a fix, Al left it in as a stalemate breaker.

- Weighted wheel maintains momentum
The free-spinning momentum was crucial - players could flick the knob and it kept rotating.
