Vortex, and the view from above and behind

The programmer behind TLL, Highway Encounter and Cyclone, whose games all look at the world from the same unusual angle — and who CRASH profiled alongside Jon Ritman.

Costa Panayi wrote the Vortex Software games — TLL, Cyclone, Highway Encounter, Alien Highway, Revolution, Deflektor — and they are recognisable at a glance because they all use the same projection: a world seen from above and slightly behind, drawn in a flat, clean, unusually readable style.

One camera angle, many games

Most Spectrum programmers chose a viewpoint per game. Panayi chose one and stayed with it for years, and the consistency is the interesting part.

TLL has you flying a jet low over a landscape, looking down and forward. Cyclone is a helicopter over islands. Highway Encounter pushes a device up a long straight road, in a projection that shows the road receding into the distance with the action laid out along it. Different games, one way of seeing.

That angle solves a real problem. A pure overhead view tells you where things are but not how tall they are; a pure side view does the reverse. A tilted overhead view gives you both at once, at the cost of some arithmetic, and it lets a flat-shaded object read as solid without any of the expense of true 3D.

Highway Encounter is the one that gets remembered, because the projection is doing something a design could not do otherwise: you can see far up the road, so you can see what is coming, so the game becomes about planning a route through a corridor instead of reacting to what appears.

A recognisable hand

Vortex games also share a look — clean colour, minimal clutter, wide fields of black — which is partly taste and partly a consequence of the attribute constraints that the same machine imposed on everyone. Don Priestley answered those constraints by making everything huge and chunky. Panayi answered them by keeping objects small, well separated and firmly outlined so that clash never gets the chance to happen.

Why he matters

Panayi treated the projection as a design decision — solving the “how do I show a 3D world on a 2D screen without 3D hardware” question once, then spending a career exploring what that answer made possible.

That CRASH billed him alongside Jon Ritman is a useful piece of period judgement, too. In 1986 those were the two names a Spectrum-owning reader would accept as an argument that the machine was capable of more than it looked.
