Game & Watch was Nintendo’s line of dedicated LCD handheld games produced from 1980 to 1991. Created by Gunpei Yokoi, these devices established the template for portable gaming, introduced the D-pad controller, and generated the profits that funded Nintendo’s home console ventures.

Fast facts

  • Era: 1980-1991
  • Creator: Gunpei Yokoi
  • Units: 60+ games
  • Innovation: D-pad invention (1982)
  • Sales: 43+ million units

Withered technology

Yokoi named his approach during this project: Lateral Thinking of Withered Technology — using mature, cheap, well-understood components in unexpected ways. LCD was ordinary by 1980 and therefore affordable, and Retro Gamer records that this was a fight inside Nintendo rather than an obvious choice: some there “wanted to use fancier technology in the Game & Watch, technology that would have reduced battery life and raised costs, but Yokoi insisted that affordability was key”.

The same discipline produced the control. A joystick “would impede the Game & Watch’s portability”, so Yokoi “began looking for solutions that would take up less space”.

The cross was not yet a D-pad. What appeared in 1982 was “four buttons arranged in a cross shape, with each one corresponding to up, down, left and right”; the single rocking pad came later. And on which game introduced it, the sources disagree — Retro Gamer says Donkey Kong Jr, where this Vault’s own D-pad entry says the Donkey Kong Multi Screen. Both are 1982, and nothing held here settles it.

The D-pad Invention

The 1982 Donkey Kong Game & Watch introduced the directional pad:

Yokoi’s Philosophy

“Lateral thinking with withered technology” — use mature, cheap technology in creative new ways rather than chasing cutting-edge specs. This philosophy defined Nintendo’s handheld strategy.

Legacy

Game & Watch established portable gaming, generated funding for the NES, introduced the D-pad, and inspired the DS naming (“Developers’ System” and “Dual Screen” — a G&W homage).
