From the edge of bankruptcy to Nintendo’s closest partner. HAL Laboratory created some of gaming’s most beloved franchises—Kirby’s accessible charm, Smash Bros.’ crossover battles. The company nearly collapsed in the early 1990s before Satoru Iwata (later Nintendo’s president) led its recovery. HAL’s DNA runs through Nintendo’s greatest successes.
