Soviet computing developed as a parallel tradition to Western computing, combining reverse-engineered Western designs with original architectures. How the designs arrived
The clone programme did not start from nothing. Western machines came in first, informally: Spectrums were “often smuggled from the West” and spread “due to their low cost and ease of use”, and it was that demand which led “local microelectronics companies [to make] ‘their’ versions of the machine”. Imports created the market the clones then served.
The result is legible in software. Six bloc machines — Pentagon 128, Didaktik M, Didaktik Gama, Bulgaria’s Byte, Poland’s Elwro and the ZS Scorpion — carry their own hardware IDs in the Spectrum community’s TZX tape standard, because enough software was written for them specifically to be worth declaring.
