Spectrum clones were unofficial ZX Spectrum variants produced across the Soviet bloc and elsewhere during the 1980s-90s. The clones are in the file format

The strongest evidence that these were treated as real machines rather than curiosities is that the Spectrum community’s own tape-format standard gives them identifiers. The TZX specification’s Hardware Type table lists thirty computers, and nine of them are clones or regional variants:

A tape file could declare which clone it was written for. That is a level of recognition the table below does not convey — and it names Brazilian and Bulgarian machines the table omits, and two Didaktik models where the table has one. Not every clone was a copy

The word “clone” flattens a real distinction. Grussu separates machines “either semi-officially built like the Unipolbrit Komputer 2086 (Poland), or bypassing copyright — from the Didaktik series (Czechoslovakia/Slovakia) to the CIP (Romania), up to the Pentagon, Scorpion and Sprinter (USSR/Russia)”.
