Peter Hajba — Future Crew to Remedy

Skaven (Peter Hajba) was one of Future Crew's two star tracker musicians, scoring landmark PC demos before carrying his craft into games at Remedy.

Overview

Skaven — Peter Hajba — is one of the most recognisable names in tracker music, half of the musical engine (with Purple Motion) that gave Future Crew their sound. His work on demos like Second Reality reached far beyond the scene; for many, an .S3M file with “Skaven” in the credits was a guarantee of quality.

When Future Crew members founded Remedy Entertainment, Hajba’s audio and visual work went with them, another strand of the scene-to-studio pipeline made personal.

Fast facts

  • Handle: Skaven.
  • Group: Future Crew.
  • Discipline: Tracker music (and visual art).
  • Later: Remedy Entertainment.

From .mod to the studio

The tracker — a music tool where samples are sequenced in a grid — was the scene’s instrument, and Skaven was one of its virtuosos. The discipline of writing memorable, tightly-produced music inside tight technical limits transferred directly to game audio, and Hajba’s career is one of the clearest lines from demo soundtrack to professional studio.
